What are Mouth Guards?
There are a number of different types of oral devices available, each of which are designed to address a unique oral condition. At our Burlingame dental practice, Dr. Golodriga offers a number of different types of oral appliances and mouth guards, including:
Snore Guards
Created for patients that experience snoring as a result of obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), snore guards are an excellent option for facilitating uninterrupted airflow. This oral appliance gently pushes the lower jaw down and slightly forward, keeping the airway open and unobstructed.
For mild to moderate cases of OSA, a mandibular advancement splint or tongue retaining device may be recommended. In contrast to conventional sleep apnea treatment with CPAP machines, oral appliances are much less restrictive, providing patients with a full range of motion while sleeping. Additionally, these devices are customized to each patient, ensuring a comfortable fit and improving treatment compliance.
Bite Guards
Caused by stress, improper bite alignment, or temporomandibular joint disorder, bruxism (teeth grinding) can quickly compromise the health of your dentition by damaging enamel. While dental enamel is incredibly resilient, repetitive nighttime grinding can quickly wear teeth down, putting the patient at risk of chipping or damaging their teeth. Bite guards can help protect teeth by preventing them from touching and grinding together while the patient sleeps. Made of highly durable acrylic, the inside of this night guard is soft to be gentle on soft tissue yet firm on the outside to prevent teeth grinding and is worn on one arch.
Athletic Guards
Similar to bite guards, sports mouth guards are worn to protect the dentition from further damage, in this case preventing sports-related trauma to teeth. These oral devices can be worn on either the top or lower arch and are custom fit to each player’s dentition.
